WEDDING CEREMONIES
THE BUDDHIST CEREMONY
In most cases, the Thai wedding ceremony is non-religious, even though monks may be involved. Indeed, no vow is announced, but it has a strong symbolic aspect that insures a good start for the newlyweds.
THE ENGAGEMENT CEREMONY
(Khan Maak Parade)
This ceremony takes place before the wedding. However, many couples arrange this ceremony on the day of the wedding, as it is practical and economical.
THE WATER BLESSING CEREMONY
(Rod Num Sang)
This is the main ceremony as it includes the Sai Monkhon ritual, the Jerm ritual, and the Malai ritual. These are conducted by the families and the most senior guest. The honored will then process the water blessing to the newlyweds, and all the other guests will do the same.
THE RECEPTION
This aspect of the wedding is optional and non-traditional to Thai customs as it is usually a Western tradition. However, it is the most popular way to host a large number of guests, and its main purpose is to celebrate marriage in a style that the bride and groom have dreamed about.
